HISTORY
1200 years old ancient temple has the history on its own. The most renowned and extensively accepted myth goes to say that a king named “Bahiradha” who reigned the place “Salamkondapuram” which was situated in the country “Illanchi”, once out of ego, he (King) dis-respected the great Saint Naradha Maharishi who visited him. Out of anger, he (Naradha Maharishi) left to the forest.
Meanwhile the “Asura” named “Koran” who was undergoing “Dhicvijayam” met Saint Naradha” (Naradha Maharishi) in the forest, who advised him to defeat Bahiradha’s ego, to fulfill his “Dhicvijayam”. Asura duly fought with the king Bahiradha and defeated him. When he lost everything in the war, out of frustration he went to forest. There, one fine day he met Saint Naradha in the forest. Filled with emotions of happiness, grief, fear, wonder, devotion (bhakthi), and self-surrender, the king repented for his mistakes and requested him for the mercy and blessings.
Saint Naradha was happy with the actions of king and enlightened the king on the path of attaining glory, by directing him to meet the “Saint Dhurvasaka”. As a consequence of an event, King met Saint Dhurvasaka and narrated the incidents and solicited his guidance. On the basis of his request, the Saint Dhurvasaka instructed him to follow “Virutham” on fridays, and to worship Lord Muruga who is dwelling under “Padhiri (one of the variety) Mango Tree” with Goddess Valli and Deivannai.
On worshipping, as per the instruction given by “Saint Dhurvasaka” he attained the glory. The king duly constructed the temple at Vallakottai, which was once known by the name “Kodai Nagar”. The temple tank (Thirukulam) that is facing the temple contains the fresh & cool water, which is so called by the name of “Vajra Theertham” (Holy water) related to the widely accepted myth, which says that, Indhra (Leader of Devas) who created the temple tank with the help of his “Vajrayudham”. Devotees believe that bathing in the temple tank and worshipping Lord Muruga by chanting Six-letter mantra will make them to get divine blessings.

Skandha Sashti Kavacham

Skanda Sashti Kavacham
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlaCM8rXAdc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6C0-lY3LgM
(By Devaraya SwamigalTranslated by P. R. Ramachander)
“Kanda Shasti Kavasam is composed by Devaraya Swamigal. This is a rare and valuable treasure that helps one to be successful in day-to-day life.In Kanda Sasti Kavacam the author prays to Lord Muruga to shower His grace. It is certain that by regular chanting of this kavacam all the predicaments of life are resolved. People without children will enjoy .. Prosperity and plenty will abound. Peace will prevail at home. The devotee who reads it will enjoy every good fortune under the sun. As a warrior going to battle puts on armour to protect himself, the Kanda Sasti Kavacam also helps one to be safe in day-to-day life”
A few words about Sashti

Sashti is the day the Lord Subramanya defeated the demon Soorapadma and saved the Earth from his evils. When the devas couldn't tolerate the evil doings of this demon, they approached the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. The kind Lord went on a war against Soorapadman. The war was waged for six days, at the end of which the Lord vanquished the asura. He threw his weapon at him and Soorapadman was split into two halves. One half became a peacock, which He took as His vaahana. The other became a cock and was transformed into his flag.
The devas, who were tormented by Soorapadman, rejoiced - they praised the Lord and prayed to him for six days. Devotees usually narrate the kanda sashti kavacham, during this period. Whoever fasts for these six days of Skanda Sashti and prays to Lord Muruga steadfastly, it is said that they would get the blessings of Lord Muruga. Those who are unable to fast for a whole day for a six-day duration, can eat just one meal during this period.

KARTIKEYA

Kartikeya

The second son of Lord Shiva, and Goddess Parvati is also known as Subramaniam, Skanda, Guha,Murugan, Shadannana or Sanmukha .
He represents a person of perfection. He is the war God, the Hindu equivalent of Mars and Ares. He was created by all the Gods to lead the heavenly hosts and destroy the demons. He is the most masculine and fierce of all the Gods. He is also fire, Agni and is very Pitta (fiery) in nature. While Ganesh removes all obstacles, Skanda bestows all spiritual powers, particularly the power of knowledge.
Another myth connected with his birth statesthat god appealed to Lord siva for help in repelling the attack of the demons.shiva responded and assumed six faces.each with a central eye from which six sparks sprang forward,These sparks fell in to a lake situated some fifty miles northwest of channai,These sparks were transformed in to six infants, nursed by six mother who comprise in the pleiades, the six Krittikas .LORD SIVA wife PARVATHI took the six infants in to her arms.she hugghed them affectionately but the process squeezed the six so strongly that they turned in to one single body but with six heads.Reared by the six krittikas.so he is called by the name of KARTIKEYA.
